How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

The standard formula for estimating asphalt weight uses a density of approximately 145 lb/ft³ for compacted hot-mix asphalt:

Tons = (L × W × (D ÷ 12) × 145) ÷ 2,000

Where L = length in feet, W = width in feet, D = depth in inches. Dividing by 2,000 converts pounds to short tons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a residential driveway be?+
For a residential driveway, 2 inches of compacted hot-mix asphalt over a 4–6 inch compacted gravel base is the standard recommendation. If you expect heavier vehicles (trucks, RVs), go with 3 inches of asphalt. The gravel base is critical for drainage and structural support — don't skip it.
Should I add extra for waste and compaction?+
Yes. Asphalt compacts roughly 20–25% when rolled, so contractors typically order 5–10% extra material to account for compaction, spillage, and irregular edges. For budget purposes, add at least 10% to your calculated tonnage. Always get quotes from multiple local suppliers as prices vary significantly by region.

How to Calculate Asphalt Needed

Calculating the right amount of asphalt prevents costly over-ordering and time-wasting return trips to the supply store. The key variables are area (length × width) and depth — which together give you volume. Most materials are sold by the cubic yard (27 cubic feet) or by the bag/pallet.

The Basic Formula

Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

Always add 10% for waste, spillage, and uneven surfaces. It's cheaper to have a little extra than to run short mid-project.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure your area in feet (length and width, or use square footage if you know it)
  2. Enter the required depth or thickness in inches
  3. Click Calculate to see cubic yards, cubic feet, and approximate bag quantities
  4. Add 10% to the result for waste before placing your order

Ordering Tips

Ready-mix concrete is delivered in trucks and is cost-effective for large pours (over 1 cubic yard). For smaller projects, bagged concrete mix works well — an 80-lb bag covers about 0.6 cubic feet when mixed. Calculate the number of bags by dividing your total cubic feet by 0.6.
