How Canvas Calculates Your Grade

Canvas (by Instructure) calculates grades using a weighted or points-based system depending on how your instructor sets up the course. In a points-based course, your grade is simply the total points earned divided by the total points possible. In a weighted course, assignment groups (e.g., Homework 30%, Exams 40%, Participation 30%) are each calculated separately, then blended by their weights.

This calculator uses the points-based method (Mode 1), which matches the most common Canvas setup. If your course uses assignment group weights, enter assignments from each group separately and note the proportions.

What Do I Need on My Final? — Formula

needed = (desired_grade − current_grade × (1 − exam_weight/100)) / (exam_weight/100) Example: current = 82%, desired = 90%, final weight = 20% needed = (90 − 82 × 0.80) / 0.20 = (90 − 65.6) / 0.20 = 24.4 / 0.20 = 122% → Not mathematically achievable without extra credit

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't this match my Canvas grade exactly?+
Canvas courses can use weighted assignment groups, dropped lowest scores, late penalties, or extra credit — none of which this tool automatically accounts for. If your course has weighted categories, calculate each category's average separately, then apply the weights manually.
What if the needed final exam score is over 100%?+
If the calculator returns a score above 100%, your desired grade is not achievable with a standard final exam. You would need extra credit or to negotiate alternative arrangements with your instructor. Focus instead on the highest grade still mathematically possible.
