How to Calculate Gold Value

Gold value depends on three factors: weight, purity (karat), and the current spot price. The spot price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (1 troy oz = 31.1035 grams). To find the melt value:

1. Convert weight to grams - 1 troy oz = 31.1035 g - 1 pennyweight (dwt) = 1.55517 g - 1 avoirdupois oz = 28.3495 g 2. Find pure gold weight: Pure gold (g) = Total weight (g) × Purity fraction 3. Calculate value: Value = Pure gold (g) × (Spot price / 31.1035) Example: 10g of 18K gold at $2,000/ozt spot price Purity = 18/24 = 0.75 Pure gold = 10 × 0.75 = 7.5 g Value/g = $2000 / 31.1035 = $64.30/g Value = 7.5 × $64.30 = $482.27

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a troy ounce?+
A troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals and weighs 31.1035 grams — slightly heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce, which is 28.35 grams. Gold spot prices are always quoted per troy ounce.
Will I get the spot price when selling gold?+
No. Buyers (pawn shops, gold dealers, refiners) typically pay 70–90% of the melt value. The difference covers their processing, refining, and profit margin. Online gold buyers often pay better rates than local pawn shops.
How do I find the karat of my gold?+
Most gold jewelry has a hallmark stamped inside a ring band or on a clasp. Common stamps: 417 (10K), 585 (14K), 750 (18K), 916 (22K), 999 (24K). If you can't find a stamp, a jeweler can test the purity with acid or an electronic tester.
