Ideal Weight Formulas

All formulas use height above 5 feet (in inches) as the variable h: Hamwi (Male): IBW = 48 + 2.7 × h Hamwi (Female): IBW = 45.5 + 2.2 × h Devine (Male): IBW = 50 + 2.3 × h Devine (Female): IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × h Robinson (Male): IBW = 52 + 1.9 × h Robinson (Female): IBW = 49 + 1.7 × h Miller (Male): IBW = 56.2 + 1.41 × h Miller (Female): IBW = 53.1 + 1.36 × h Results in kg; multiply by 2.205 for lbs

Healthy Weight Ranges

These formulas give a single-point estimate. A healthy weight range is typically the ideal weight ±10%. For example, if your ideal weight is 160 lbs, a healthy range would be 144–176 lbs. BMI can also define healthy weight: 18.5–24.9 kg/m² is the standard healthy range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?+
No single formula is definitively best. The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings for drug dosing. The average of all four formulas provides a reasonable estimate for general health purposes.
Does frame size affect ideal weight?+
Yes. People with larger bone frames naturally weigh more. The standard adjustment is ±10% for large or small frame size. Frame size is often estimated by measuring wrist circumference relative to height.
