Mulch Formula

Volume (cu ft) = length × width × (depth_in / 12) Cubic Yards = cu ft / 27 Bags needed = cu ft / bag_volume

Recommended Mulch Depths

ApplicationRecommended Depth
Flower beds2–3 inches
Tree rings3–4 inches (keep away from trunk)
Vegetable gardens2–3 inches
Playground areas6–12 inches (safety)
Weed suppression4+ inches

Mulch Benefits

Mulch conserves soil moisture (reducing watering by 25–50%), moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, prevents soil erosion, and improves soil health as it decomposes. Organic mulches like wood chips, bark, and straw are preferable to gravel for most garden applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I refresh mulch?+
Replenish mulch once or twice a year. In spring to add fresh mulch and suppress early weeds, and optionally in fall to protect plant roots from freezing temperatures. Organic mulch decomposes and needs regular topping.
How many bags of mulch make a cubic yard?+
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Using 2 cu ft bags: about 13–14 bags. Using 3 cu ft bags: about 9 bags. Bulk mulch by the cubic yard is more economical for large areas.

How to Calculate Mulch Needed

Calculating the right amount of mulch prevents costly over-ordering and time-wasting return trips to the supply store. The key variables are area (length × width) and depth — which together give you volume. Most materials are sold by the cubic yard (27 cubic feet) or by the bag/pallet.

The Basic Formula

Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

Always add 10% for waste, spillage, and uneven surfaces. It's cheaper to have a little extra than to run short mid-project.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure your area in feet (length and width, or use square footage if you know it)
  2. Enter the required depth or thickness in inches
  3. Click Calculate to see cubic yards, cubic feet, and approximate bag quantities
  4. Add 10% to the result for waste before placing your order

Ordering Tips

Ready-mix concrete is delivered in trucks and is cost-effective for large pours (over 1 cubic yard). For smaller projects, bagged concrete mix works well — an 80-lb bag covers about 0.6 cubic feet when mixed. Calculate the number of bags by dividing your total cubic feet by 0.6.
