What Is an RMD?

A Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) is the minimum amount you must withdraw annually from certain tax-deferred retirement accounts once you reach RMD age. Under SECURE Act 2.0 (2022), the RMD starting age increased to 73 for those born 1951–1959, and will increase to 75 for those born in 1960 or later.

Accounts subject to RMDs include traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) plans. Roth IRAs are NOT subject to RMDs during the owner's lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I don't take my RMD?+
Failing to take your RMD (or taking too little) results in a penalty tax. Under SECURE Act 2.0, the penalty was reduced from 50% to 25% of the amount not withdrawn (and further reduced to 10% if corrected within two years). The IRS may waive the penalty for reasonable errors if you make up the missed distribution promptly.
Can I take more than my RMD?+
Yes, you can always withdraw more than the required minimum. The RMD is the floor, not a ceiling. However, any amount withdrawn is taxed as ordinary income in the year of withdrawal, so you may want to plan distributions strategically with a tax professional.
Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?+
Traditional Roth IRAs are NOT subject to RMDs during the owner's lifetime — one of their key tax advantages. However, inherited Roth IRAs (received by non-spouse beneficiaries) are subject to RMD rules. Roth 401(k) accounts were subject to RMDs until 2024, when SECURE Act 2.0 eliminated that requirement.
