2024 Federal Tax Brackets

The US uses a progressive tax system — only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. The standard deduction is subtracted before brackets apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?+
Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income — the highest bracket you fall into. Your effective tax rate is your total tax divided by total income — the actual percentage of your income paid in taxes. Because the US system is progressive, your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate. For example, if you're in the 22% bracket, only income above $47,150 (single) is taxed at 22%; income below that is taxed at 10% and 12%.
Should I take the standard deduction or itemize?+
The standard deduction is a flat amount that reduces your taxable income without needing receipts or documentation. Itemizing makes sense only if your qualifying deductions (mortgage interest, state and local taxes up to $10,000, charitable contributions, medical expenses above 7.5% of AGI) exceed the standard deduction for your filing status. Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act raised the standard deduction significantly in 2018, most taxpayers benefit from taking it.
